Chapter 675: Losing Their Minds
She was determined to make a move against Isaac Mendoza.
But now, she couldn’t find an opportunity. She couldn’t even see Isaac Mendoza, so how could she make a move?
She had also considered bribing a nurse at the hospital to tamper with Isaac’s medication or food. But now, the Mendoza family was surely overseeing every single detail concerning Isaac. Bribing a nurse by his side was highly unlikely, and there was also the risk of the nurse turning on her.
Of course, making a move herself also carried risks. But as long as she wasn’t caught administering the poison, even if the Mendoza family later discovered Isaac had been poisoned, there would be no evidence it was her.
The problem was, how could she get to see Isaac Mendoza?
Litzy Livingston was at her wit’s end.
When she got home, Pedro immediately came up to her.
“Mom, where did you go?”
Litzy didn’t hide it from him. “Went to the hospital.”
“What did you go to the hospital for? To see the Mendozas?”
Pedro had already heard that Isaac Mendoza was still hospitalized.
“Yeah.”
“Did you meet them?”
“No.” Litzy Livingston looked distressed. She asked a servant to bring her coffee before continuing. “The Mendoza family’s bodyguards said Isaac was resting and flat out refused to let me upstairs. I didn’t even get to see any of the Mendozas.”
Hearing this, disappointment flashed in Pedro’s eyes.
“What do we do now?” he said, his face crumpling. “The Mendozas could make a move against me at any time. How do I avoid this disaster?”
Litzy pondered for a moment, then forced a faint smile.
“Pedro, don’t worry for now. You’re home. Your father and I will protect you. As for the Mendozas, we’ll eventually find a chance.”
But Pedro wasn’t listening. He paced anxiously around the room.
“No, I absolutely cannot let the Mendozas ruin me… But they hate me so much. They won’t let me off.”
Just then, a servant brought the coffee upstairs. As he glanced at Pedro, he couldn’t help thinking the young master looked like an idiot. Afraid of being caught, however, he quickly lowered his head.
Soon afterward, he was cleaning the kitchen with a maid and couldn’t help muttering,
“Has the young master lost his mind since coming back?”
The maid snorted with laughter.
“I think so too. He’s been going on about how the Mendozas want to harm him. When did they ever say they’d harm him? And the madam is ridiculous too, letting him lead her by the nose.”
“Shh, keep your voice down. Don’t let them hear. Speaking of which, do they really plan to go after the Mendozas?”
“Hmph, they’ve both lost their minds. It was the young master who got the Mendoza family’s young lady kidnapped in the first place. Now they’re acting like he’s the poor, wronged party. Honestly, even if the Mendozas did want to retaliate, so what? If it weren’t for the young master, the Mendoza young lady wouldn’t have suffered all that.”
“Exactly. I just hope it doesn’t drag us into it.”
“Don’t worry. The Mendozas are actually pretty decent people. As long as you don’t provoke them, they won’t bother us. Oh, and…”
The speaking maid glanced behind her, hurried to the kitchen door, and shut it.
“What are you doing?”
“I’m going to tell you a secret.”
She lowered her voice.
“I saw it yesterday. Madam had someone get her some kind of medicine. I don’t know exactly what it is, but judging by their behavior, it’s definitely something bad.”
“No way! What does she want that kind of medicine for?”
“Exactly.”
“She’s crazy! The young master is back safe and sound, and she still won’t let it go? Does she want to completely ruin the Livingston family’s relationship with the Mendozas? If it comes to that, the Livingston family is finished!”
The male servant was shocked.
“Now I’m worried. What if she actually gets a chance and harms someone in the Mendoza family?”
The maid frowned deeply.
The male servant noticed her expression and asked,
“Seems like you’re pretty concerned about the Mendozas?”
The maid sighed.
“They helped me before. Oh right, you weren’t working here then. It was years ago. My sister was seriously ill, and my dad had just lost his job. The wages I earned as a maid here weren’t enough for our family’s expenses. My parents were out doing odd jobs every day, putting up with all sorts of abuse. My sister was so sick she couldn’t get out of bed, and we couldn’t afford a doctor. It broke my heart to see her. I wanted to ask Mrs. Livingston for help.”
At that time, Mrs. Livingston had a manicurist at the house.
The maid sincerely explained her family’s situation and asked if she could borrow some money to pay for her sister’s medical bills. She even offered to forgo her wages or receive only one-third of them each month until the debt was repaid.
But Mrs. Livingston merely scoffed.
“You’re just someone who works in my house. Why should I give you money? Besides, what if you take the money and run? Who can guarantee you’ll keep working for me?”
The maid was disappointed but said nothing.
She admitted to herself that Mrs. Livingston wasn’t entirely unreasonable. They were strangers. Helping would have been kind, but refusing was also within her rights.
She simply apologized and turned to leave.
But just as she reached the door, she heard Mrs. Livingston laugh loudly and tell the manicurist,
“Paying for her sister’s medical bills? I think she just wants money to buy herself some luxury goods! Besides, people of their class have cheap lives. Dying would serve them right!”
The manicurist laughed awkwardly but remained silent, probably thinking Mrs. Livingston had gone too far.
The maid was furious.
It was one thing not to lend her money, but why say such cruel things? Just because her family was poor, did that mean her sister deserved to die?
This so-called elegant, noble lady was nothing like she pretended to be behind closed doors.
In a fit of anger, the maid almost quit on the spot. But then she remembered her family depended on her income, so she swallowed her pride and stayed.
Later, Isaac Mendoza and Gracie Mendoza came to the Livingston residence for dinner.
After finishing her work, she thought about her sister lying helplessly at home, too weak even to groan from the pain. She couldn’t hold back her tears and hid in a corner crying.
Unexpectedly, Gracie Mendoza saw her while taking a walk after dinner.
Gracie gently asked what was wrong, and the maid poured out everything about her family’s situation.
After listening quietly, Gracie simply asked for her name and then left.
The maid didn’t think much of it.
But two days later, she received a large sum of money.
Gracie Mendoza had arranged for it to be sent to her.
